U-Stop Convenience Stores of Lincoln presented the Lincoln Parks Foundation with a check for $10,000 as part of its $40,000 commitment to the Junior Golf Program at Ager Golf and Learning Center. The U-Stop sponsorship will provide for new equipment, instructional tools and additional staff to support the increased demand from young people wanting to learn golf. The company will contribute an additional $10,000 a year for the next three years to fulfill the $40,000 commitment.
“The Lincoln Parks Foundation is grateful for this generous gift from U-Stop, which supports the vision of the Ager Golf and Learning Center to provide the best programming at the most affordable rate to beginning and youth golfers. Their support is an example of a successful public-private partnership that works so well in our community.” – Maggie Stuckey, Lincoln Parks Foundation Executive Director
The Whitehead family, owner of Whitehead Oil Company and U-Stop Convenience Shops, has been a longtime supporter of the City Parks and Recreation Department and kids’ recreation programs.
“My dad, Bus Whitehead, was one of the founding members of the Lincoln Parks Foundation, and we obviously think it’s important to continue that mission. Strong parks programs are vital to the livability of the community. Also, we are a family of golfers. It’s a great way to get kids away from screens, get outside and build character.” – Mark Whitehead, President of the company
The nine-hole Jim Ager Memorial Golf Course was built in the 1960s. The Ager Golf and Learning Center is open to all golfers with a focus on the junior and beginning golfer. In the past few years, participation has grown to serve more than 1,000 young athletes in leagues and youth camps. Through its partnerships in the community, Ager staff provides instruction to thousands at the Boys & Girls Club of Lincoln, YMCAs of Lincoln, City Recreation Centers, Sticks for Kids and more.
