We have so many amazing staff members at Lincoln City Golf and we want you to get to know them too! Our PGA Pros are some of the most dedicated and passionate people in our programs, so we’ve got a series of interviews from them, sharing their own golf experiences and their opinions for this year’s golfers.
Meet Scott Carlson!
Scott has years of experience and an outstanding reputation in the Lincoln golf community. He began as the Head Professional at Holmes Golf Course in March of 2016, but his history with Lincoln City Golf Courses goes back to his childhood, where he got his first Hole in One at Jim Ager during a Junior Tournament at age 15.
When and where did you start playing golf?
When I was 9, I began playing at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Hastings, Nebraska. I really got the bug shortly after and played a lot of golf at Ager Golf Course, known as the Junior.
Who influenced your game the most?
My Dad (Larry Carlson) taught me to play, taught me golf course etiquette and gave me my first set of clubs. He took me on the course whenever he went when I was young. Bob Schuchart at Holmes Golf Course was a positive influence.
Did you have talented right away or did you have to really commit?
I did acquire a natural ability to swing the club initially. I soon learned that in order to score well there was no substitute for hard work and practice.
What’s in your golf bag?
PING G Driver, 3 wood and 3 hybrid. Bridgestone J40 irons 4-PW. Cleveland 50 degree and Callaway PM Grind 54 and 58 degree wedges. Scotty Cameron Futura putter. Callaway Chrome Soft golf ball.
If you had to pick a favorite club, what would it be?
3 wood. I like the trajectory of it when hit off the fairway and love to chip with it from the fringe around the green.
What was your greatest personal victory playing?
Individual Medalist in the High School Class A Districts when I was a sophomore at Holmes Golf Course. Our team Lincoln Northeast also won the team title.
Name your top golf experience(s) to date.
Being at The Masters was great, got to go last year. The Ryder Cup in Chicago was awesome. I played golf at Highland CC in Omaha with Tour Pro Tom Sieckmann and his brother Jim. Our fourth was Matt Zadalis a legend in Nebraska Golf history.
What’s the greatest golf advice you’ve ever been given?
To use a low lofted club to chip with when you have lots of putting green surface between yourself and the hole.
What is the best relationship you have formed through golf?
That would have to be my college golf team mate Pat McGonigal. Pat helped me get my first Assistant Pro job, we taught my first golf classes together and he introduced me to my wife.
What sort of life lessons do you get from golf?
Dealing with failure, being humble, not ever giving up.
What advice do you give to beginner golfers?
Always remember that Golf is a game. Have fun with it.
What’s your favorite Lincoln City golf course?
Pioneers Golf Course. It was our home course in High School. Great scenery and a fun layout.
Who should we watch out for this year?/Who are the up and coming players?
Ricky Fowler, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood are players that seem ready to win a lot this year. Those on the rise to become new stars are Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
